Guidance concerning age-appropriate literature and controversial subject matter.

Our Learning Resource Centre has recently purchased some new and exciting books for students to borrow. We would like to draw to your attention that some of these books contain topics relating to mental health, race, gender, religion and bullying. Some titles contain swearing.

When a student chooses a book from our LRC we do our best to advise them on the suitability of their choices. We endeavour to highlight any controversial content by means of a conversation at check-out; however, as we aim to cultivate a love of reading, ultimately the choice of book remains with the student. If you have concerns relating to your child’s book choice, we would be grateful if you could please begin with a conversation with your child about choosing a different genre and pointing them in the direction of the LRC at school for further help with their selection.

COVID-19 vaccination for children aged 12 to 15 years of age

The Covid 19 vaccination is being offered to all children in Year 7 to Year 11 who are aged 12-15 (up to the day of their 16th birthday) on the date of the session in school. Our team is scheduled to visit The English Martyrs on the 8th & 9th November 2021 as part of this programme. If you would like your child to receive this immunisation in school, please ensure your consent form has been submitted by the 4th November 2021.

In exceptional circumstances, we may have to move the date of the school session.

How do I give my consent?

  1. Go to https://fx.hdft.nhs.uk/CovidConsentForm/Covid19VaccinationConsent
  2. Enter the School Code 140867 and click “Find School”.
  3. Complete the form with your child’s information and parent/guardian contact information*.
  4. Click the green “Submit” button.

*If you provide a valid email address you will receive an automatic email confirmation to say your form has been submitted. Following your child being vaccinated in school, they will be provided with a letter and additional information about post vaccination care. If your child has specific medical requirements one of our nurses may need to get in touch before we are due to visit school. We never pass on your contact information to third parties.

Once we have your consent, we will offer your child the vaccination at the school session.

We will not vaccinate children at the session in the following circumstances:

  • When parents have not consented
  • When children want to be vaccinated but parents have not consented
  • When parents have consented and the child doesn’t want it

Why is the Covid 19 vaccine being offered?

The main purpose of the COVID-19 school age vaccination programme is to provide protection to the children who receive the vaccine and may help to reduce transmission of COVID-19 in the wider population.

During the vaccination delivery we will maintain the range of measures we have in place to keep everyone safe from COVID-19.

At present the school programme is an offer first dose of the vaccine.

 How is the Covid 19 vaccine administered?

 The vaccine is an intramuscular injection in the upper arm. At the session in school, we will always monitor a child for 15 minutes after administration of the vaccine to ensure support if they fell unwell immediately after the vaccination.

The Pfizer BioNTech Covid 19 vaccine is used for this programme, Comirnaty is the brand name for the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine, it is exactly the same.

Dear Parent/Carer,

We would like to invite you to a Year 7 Information Evening on October 7th 2021, 4.30pm-5.45pm.
 
We appreciate that due to restrictions last academic year many parents have not had the opportunity to visit the school and it will be wonderful to see you all face-to-face.
 
On the evening:
The evening will start at 4.30pm with a welcome from the Head teacher in St Anne’s Hall within the main school building. 
 
After this, there will be a short informative talk (approximately 20 minutes) where we will share key information about the educational journey of your child and how you can best support them this year and beyond. Following this, there will be an opportunity for parents to meet members of the Senior Team, Year 7 Form Tutors and the Year 7 Pastoral Manager, Mr Hutchinson. 
 
We expect that this will be a well-attended event and in the interests of ensuring we have the capacity within the hall, we are asking if students can refrain from attending.

On Friday 8th October, the Flu Vaccination will be offered to ALL students from Year 7-11.  If you wish for your child to have the vaccinations, consent forms are now being completed online. 

Please complete the form by Monday 4th October at midnight.

 

Please note: Any consents submitted after this time will not be included in the school session.

Protecting Children Against Influenza (Flu) and Complications

The nasal influenza vaccination is being offered to all children in Reception-Year 11. Our team is scheduled to visit The English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College this Autumn as part of this programme. If you would like your child to receive this immunisation in school, please ensure your consent form has been submitted within one week of receiving this letter.

Why is the influenza vaccine being offered?

This vaccination programme is in place to help protect your child against influenza (flu) and stop the spread of the virus within schools, families and the wider community. Influenza is an unpleasant illness that can lead to school absences and sometimes causes serious complications requiring hospitalisation.

Vaccinating your child doesn’t just project them – by helping to stop the spread of influenza this winter they will also be protecting vulnerable friends and family of all ages.

How is the influenza vaccine administered?

Unlike most vaccinations, the nasal influenza vaccine is a quick and simple spray up the nose. There are a small number of children for whom the nasal vaccine is not appropriate. In these cases we offer an intramuscular injection as an alternative. Please check the link below for more information.

Does the nasal influenza vaccine contain pork gelatine? Can my child have the injection instead?

Yes, the nasal influenza vaccine contains trace amounts of porcine gelatine. If you would like your child to receive the injectable influenza vaccine, which does not contain porcine gelatine, please do not complete the online consent form. Instead, please give us a ring on 0300 003 2554. You will need to bring your child to a local community clinic as we cannot give the injection in school.

Dear Parent/Carer
We would like to invite you to a charity coffee morning in school.  In previous years we have raised fund for local Charities. As the world starts to recover from the pandemic and return to a more normal life we would like to maintain our support for a local charity to be voted by students. We would love for you to come along and support the event.

As a parent/carer of a student who is new to the school, we thought it would also be a wonderful opportunity for you to visit us, get to know the school a little more and to see your child in their new environment.  The event will run from 9:30 – 11:00 on Friday, 1st October in St. Anne’s Hall and you should report to main school reception. There is no need to purchase a ticket in advance however there will be an opportunity to donate to the charity on the day.

Dear Parent/Carer

I hope this letter finds you safe and well. As we come to the end of a very challenging year for many of us, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support.

As the Government’s plans to return to a greater level of normality begins later this month, we will be working closely as a Trust and with Public Health England to ensure that any changes we make in September will have our students and staff’s safety at heart. All of our communication will continue on the app and all the letters for your son / daughter can be found on the ‘Parent’ tab and then click on year group and then letters home. We do have to carry out two lateral flow tests just before students return in September and within 5 days of each other. Similar to last year, it will mean a staggered start due to the logistics of this task. We will be in touch in the coming weeks, but we are planning to get Sixth Form and Year 11 completed as best we can before Monday 6th September and start with Years 7 & 10 on the Monday 6th. This would mean Years 8 & 9 would return on Tuesday 7th September. We will confirm this once guidance and plans are completed.

Can I also take this opportunity to say how proud I am of all of our students. The way they have responded to the challenges has been inspirational. It has been a privilege to be their headteacher. Although many of our Year 11 Students will return in September to our Sixth Form, I want to single out Years 13 & 11 students, in particular, for their tenacity and resilience. We look forward to celebrating their success this summer. All of the details for this summer’s results can also be found on our website.

It is also a time we say goodbye to special members of staff. Mrs McHugh has been at EMS for a year and has now secured a full-time position. Mr Hall leaves us after 7 years as an invaluable cog in our Pastoral wheel. Mr McAllister has been with us for 9 years and has been pivotal in some of the most memorable shows and performances the school and college have ever seen. Mr McMahon leaves us after 17 years as our Deputy Headteacher. He has made a huge impact on many families in our town leaving a legacy that will live for a long time to come. Mrs Carr is retiring after 18 years at the School, and we all know that her optimism and cheerfulness is going to be sorely missed. Last, but not least, Mrs Hickey is also retiring after 19 years (I know she doesn’t look old enough!). We will deeply miss her unstinting dedication to the students and the dignified, humble way she serves our school. Good luck and God Bless to them All.

As many of you know I also will be retiring this summer. After 33 years as a teacher and 11 years as a headteacher, I have experienced many changes and challenges. Over the past 6 years I have had some of the most exhilarating times in education whilst at EMS. I do feel however, that now is the right time to hand over the baton to Mrs Crawshaw. Mrs Crawshaw and I have been working closely over recent months and I am incredibly positive about the next chapter of this unique school. Our recent inspection in March 2021 was very positive and I feel the school is now ready to come out of the other side of this extraordinary period changed, yet ready for change, in equal measure.

I would like to leave you with one of my favourite quotes which has provided solace to many people during this pandemic. It comes from a religious book called ‘Revelations of Divine Love’ from 1393. It was the first book ever written and published by an English woman, during the Middle Ages and during a global pandemic;

“ but all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.”

I am confident that all will be well going forward for this wonderful School and the wonderful people of this Town.

Following advice from Public Health on a positive lateral flow test result within the Kitchen we are taking precautions and closing the catering service until the PCR result is received.

Please can you ensure your child brings a pack lunch to school tomorrow. We will have a limited supply of sandwiches available for our Free School Meal Students.

Once we have a further update we will be in touch, we thank you for your understanding.


We have great pleasure in announcing that The English Martyrs Catholic School and Sixth Form College are once again hoping to run our annual ski trip to Austria departing Saturday, 16th April 2022 and returning Saturday, 23rd April 2022.

This is on the proviso that all current travel and Covid restrictions have been lifted.

We are only able to offer this trip to students who will be in Years 7-10, and Year 12 next year due to the importance of exams and revision for Year 11 and 13.

The cost of the trip is provisionally £859, paid on a monthly basis. This price includes:

      • 5 days skiing with 5 hours of instruction
      • 8 day coach hire and return ferry crossing, Dover-Calais
      • 5 nights’ accommodation, bed, breakfast and evening meal
      • Hot lunch voucher for each day skiing
      • 5 day lift pass
      • 5 days hire of ski equipment and helmet (clothing not included)
      • Fully comprehensive insurance
      • Personalized ‘hoodie’ as a memento of the trip
      • Evening entertainment entrance fees
      • Full 24 hour resort representation through IBT Travel

Additional costs may include:

      • Hiring of a jacket and salopettes, if required, approximately £50 from Sayers of Yarm
      • Any extra drinks you may purchase during the day
      • An up to date passport

Dear Parents/Carers

As we approach the half-term break, I would like to thank you for your continued support for and partnership with our school community.

As the lifting of lockdown continues, I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of a few important messages to keep our school community safe.

Lateral Flow Tests
Students and staff should continue to test themselves twice over the half-term break. All students should have enough LFT kits to last them. Results should continue to be logged on the NHS Test and Trace website.

COVID 19 Symptoms
If your child develops symptoms then you should arrange a PCR test. Positive results need to be reported to the school via email (admin@ems.bhcet.org.uk) up to and including Tuesday 1st June. This is to enable us to identify and contact any other students to advise them of the need to self-isolate. Your child would also need to self-isolate for 10 days; along with any family members who have had close contact with them.

We are striving to get students back into the routines of school life after two lengthy periods of lockdown. In the remaining six weeks of this academic year, we will be having a big push on standards – ensuring that our students are always striving to be the best that they can be.

I would like to remind you of the following elements of our uniform policy (full details are available on our website):

Uniform
Black Skirt (A-line, flared or pleated of a knee length) to be worn with plain opaque black tights. Skirts with front or side splits must not be worn
We insist that all students wear formal plain black shoes.

Bags
Students must have a bag suitable for bringing planners, books and other basic equipment(pen, pencil, ruler, rubber, all books for the day’s lessons, PE kit when required) to the academy each day.

Hairstyles
Hairstyles are expected to be reasonable with no obvious artificial colouring. Hairstyles incorporating shapes/patterns are not acceptable. Any student attending with an unacceptable hairstyle will be unable to access lessons in the normal way until this has been attended to. This action is to save the student involved from possible humiliation and embarrassment and to maintain high standards. Similar action will be taken with regards to shaved eyebrows, body piercing and tattoos. Boys must be clean-shaven unless for reasons of religious observance.

Jewellery
Apart from the items below, the wearing of jewellery is not allowed:

Students may wear a wristwatch and one small stud in each ear lobe.

There is a risk of accidental injury from wearing jewellery in the academy and we cannot take responsibility for loss or damage to items of jewellery.

Make-Up
The wearing of make-up, nail varnish false eyelashes and false nails is not allowed.

School resumes at 08:45 on Monday 7th June and we close for the summer break at 15:00 on Friday 16th July.

I would like to invite you to attend our Year 7 Parents’ Evening on Thursday 29th April 2021, 16:00pm – 18:30pm

The school has introduced a new intuitive and easy to use online appointment booking system. This allows you to choose your own appointment times with teachers and you will receive an email confirming your appointments. We are confident this will be an improvement to the previous system and welcome any feedback.

Appointment booking is now open and will close on Thursday 29th April, 1pm. Should you wish to make any changes after this date please contact the school office.  Teacher slots are limited so we advise booking early.
