Following on from the government’s decision to increase the measures taken to reduce the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19) infection in Hartlepool, I am writing to inform you that as from Monday 5th October, face masks will be compulsory for all staff and students in communal areas of the school.
Students must wear a face mask
- On school transport
- On entry into the school buildings
- On all corridors/staircases when moving between lessons
- When queuing up for lunch – but not whilst eating
- When lining up at the end of break and lunch sessions
- In the changing rooms whilst getting ready for PE
Students will also be encouraged to wear a face mask over break and lunchtimes.
It is important that facemasks are used sensibly and responsibly and I would urge you to discuss their use with your child. We want to ensure that we protect each other as a community. Safe storage and disposal of facemasks is essential in our school and sixth form college, please can you ensure your child has sufficient supplies of facemasks and a named sealable plastic bag to place their used facemasks in. It is important that if they are disposing of a facemask at school that they use the lidded bin around the buildings to ensure the safe disposal of all facemasks. Our aim is to keep your child in education throughout the winter, making up for all the lost time from the national lockdown.
We know that some students and staff are exempt from wearing face coverings due to the following reasons:
- They can’t put on, wear or remove a face covering because of a physical or mental illness or impairment, or disability
- They are speaking to, or providing assistance to, someone who relies on lip reading, clear sound or facial expressions to communicate.
If you believe your child should be exempt from wearing a mask, then we would ask that you please inform the school via email to their pastoral manager. They will be provided with a sticker for their planner(Y7-11) or lanyard exemption card (Y12/13) so that staff and students do not ask why they are not wearing a facemask.
We have secured a supply of disposable face masks and pastoral managers/Heads of Year will provide these to students to wear as part of the uniform, if they arrive without their own facemasks. There will be a charge of 20 pence per facemask provided, which will be deducted from the student’s ParentPay account at the end of each week.
The wearing of face coverings and masks should not be used in place of other risk mitigations and hygiene measures. Staff and students are reminded that they must follow the school rules and guidance regarding social risk controls, including good hand hygiene practices.
