Year 6 Transition Letter: 23rd June 2021

Dear Parents/Carers

I hope this letter finds you safe and well. Firstly, thank-you to those parents who have been in touch about specific questions regarding your son/daughter on the back of our initial letter in April. Our Pastoral Team have undertaken several enhanced transition visits for some students and our liaison and visits to primary schools is gathering pace. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

The main purpose of this letter is to let you know that we cannot go ahead with face to face transition days or events. The Local Authority in conjunction with Public Health England have directed us that due to the rise in cases that we must continue with current restrictions. This means the integrity of the bubbles for our existing students cannot be compromised. It is very frustrating, but I hope you understand .

Our plan is to push some transition information and clips online (our website) so students and families can at least get a taste for things (including a virtual tour) and put some names to faces. We are also looking to do a live event on the 8th July at 6pm to replace the planned Parents’ Evening and the first of the transition days. Please look at our website late next week with the details for that.

The plans for how September will look are still up in the air, but the start date is still Monday 6th September 2021.

In the coming week students will be placed into Houses and Tutor Groups. We will share this information with you around the 8th July event. Please don’t worry about anything. We are very experienced in this process and know how much of a big event it is. Most, if not all, of the Pastoral Team are parents as well as educators so can empathise with you!

School uniform is available from Trutex. More information can be found on the parent area of our school website (https://ems.bhcet.org.uk). All orders are made online or via telephone and Trutex normally give us brochures to give to you in our welcome pack in July. We have been advised that final dates for orders will be Monday 2nd August if they are to be ready for the September start of term.

Full attendance in school is vital, so please do not book holidays without checking term times. The term dates are also available on the school website. Schools across the country have experienced some concerning trends in pupil attendance and punctuality and that will be a big focus for us in the new Academic Year.

Your son/daughter enters The English Martyrs School at an exciting time. They will be one of the first Year Groups to benefit from our new state-of-the-art school. The School is striving for excellence in all areas and with your support your child will play a key role in shaping the School’s future. Our school year on year has more students gain 5 GCSEs at the higher-grade pass (including English and Maths) than any other school in the area and we are consistently above the national average. Our Sixth Form has a 100% pass rate in more than 25 subjects. Our last Section 48 inspection deemed the School to be “Good”, with many outstanding features. Our recent Section 8 Ofsted Inspection also reflected the positive strides the school is making and in dealing with challenges of the recent pandemic. It is an exciting time for our School and we are thrilled that you have chosen to be a part of it.

We are running a Summer School from Monday 19th July – Friday 23rd July. In recent years, this has been a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by our students, and parents too. It is an excellent opportunity for students to gain further insight into the excellent subjects and facilities our school offers. They can build upon friendships made during the transition days in school and meet new staff.  This year more than ever, we would encourage them to take part.

If you wish to express an interest in your child attending the Summer School, please email kspears@ems.bhcet.org.uk as soon as possible. Further arrangements will be communicated to you nearer the time.  We will say more about this on the live broadcast on 8th July.

Once again, a warm welcome to you and please do not hesitate to contact us at the school if you wish to discuss any aspect of your son/daughter’s education. We wish them all the very best in their final months in their primary school.

Yours faithfully
