SIXTH formers are honing their leadership skills thanks to an initiative that gives them a say in the running of their school.
A Sixth Form Leadership Group has been elected at The English Martyrs Catholic School and Sixth Form College, Hartlepool, and is already having an impact on student life.
The body meets regularly with the school’s senior leadership team to discuss issues identified as important to their studies and it has been instrumental in highlighting a variety of new ideas.
English Martyrs has already signed up to be an official ‘School of Sanctuary’ as project that will offer hospitality and support to students who move into the UK seeking asylum. “The sixth formers feel strongly that we have a culture those who are seeking sanctuary,” said head teacher Sara Crawshaw.
“We are now working with the charity to create support, challenge misconceptions and to further enhance our care for those in need.”
Sixth Form students are also influencing improvements to their facilities and curriculum.
An increase in teaching time has given Key Stage 5 students more contact time with specialist staff. A level classes have increased in contact time from four to five hours a week. New subjects have been offered including Government & Politics, Sociology and Cambridge National Sport.
A student suggestion box has been affective in capturing student voice and improving the facilities. A newly refurbished common room and study area, along with improved catering has been driven by our fantastic students.
Mrs Crawshaw added: “Our Sixth Formers are brilliant ambassadors. They are all dedicated young people who work in partnership with the SLT to ensure we continually strive invest in our school and wider community. They are making a real difference to school life and are enhancing their communications and organisational skills along the way. We are very proud of them”
