Dear Parent/Guardian,

Children in Year 9 are offered immunisations for Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio (Td/iPV) and Meningitis ACWY (Men ACWY). These vaccinations will be delivered from February to April 2023.

Helping to protect your child against meningococcal disease and septicaemia

The meningococcal ACWY (Men ACWY) vaccine is available for all pupils in school year 9.

The Men ACWY vaccination helps to protect your child against four types of meningococcal bacteria (groups A, C, W and Y). These can cause meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). These diseases are very serious and can kill, especially if not diagnosed early. Cases of meningococcal W disease (“Men W”) in England have increased significantly in recent years, and it is in response to this rise in cases that this vaccine was introduced.

Helping to protect your child against diphtheria, tetanus and polio

The Td/iPV booster vaccine helps protect your child against diphtheria, tetanus and polio. Diphtheria is a serious disease that can damage the heart and nervous system, and in severe cases, it can kill. Tetanus is a painful disease affecting the nervous system which can lead to muscle spasms, breathing problems and can kill. Polio is a virus that attacks the nervous system which can cause permanent paralysis of muscles. If it affects the chest muscles or the brain, polio can kill.
