Dear Parent/Carer
Y11 GCSE Science Qualification
Following our review of Year 10 progress and mock examination outcomes, we have carefully considered the most appropriate Science pathway for students as they move into Year 11.
Students currently studying Separate Science have worked extremely hard throughout Year 10. However, our review has shown that the significant amount of additional content required within Separate Science has resulted in a very demanding curriculum pace. This has limited opportunities to revisit prior learning, consolidate understanding, complete practical work and engage in structured revision before the GCSE examinations.
To ensure that all students are given the best possible opportunity to achieve their potential, students currently studying Separate Science will continue their studies from September through the AQA Combined Science: Trilogy GCSE course.
This decision has been made to maximise students' chances of success by providing additional time to:
- consolidate and strengthen key scientific knowledge;
- complete practical investigations and examination practice;
- revisit and secure prior learning;
- undertake structured GCSE revision before final examinations.
Students studying Combined Science will continue to achieve two GCSE qualifications in Science.
Importantly, students who achieve the required GCSE grades will still be able to progress to A Level Biology, Chemistry and Physics in the Sixth Form, in line with the school's normal entry requirements.
We appreciate that some parents and carers may wish to discuss this decision further. If you would like a member of staff to contact you, please contact the main reception to request a call back.
Thank you for your continued support.
Yours faithfully,
Ms S Manning
