Dear Parents / Carers,

I hope this letter finds you well. As we approach the end of the academic year, I would like to take this opportunity to emphasise the significance of the upcoming Prep Examinations and end of year assessments for our Year 10 students.

‘Prep’ or ‘mock’ examinations serve as a crucial component of our students' educational journey. They provide a valuable opportunity for students to experience the format and conditions of the actual exams they will face in Year 11. Here are some key reasons why these exams are important:

1. Familiarisation with exam conditions: Practice exams simulate the real exam environment, helping students become accustomed to the pressure and time constraints they will encounter. This experience can significantly reduce anxiety and improve performance during the actual exams.

2. Assessment of knowledge and skills: These exams allow both students and teachers to assess the current level of understanding and identify areas that need improvement. This feedback is essential for targeted revision and effective future planning.

3. Development of exam techniques: Practicing under exam conditions helps students develop essential exam techniques, such as time management, question analysis, and structured answering. These skills are critical for achieving success in their final exams.

4. Building confidence and evaluating areas of strength and development: Performing well in mock exams can boost students' confidence and motivation. It provides them with a sense of achievement and reassurance that they are on the right track. Where exams don’t go as planned, students can use the feedback to improve their performance next time and learn from mistakes.

5. Early intervention: Identifying weaknesses early allows for timely intervention and support. Teachers can provide additional resources, guidance, and personalised attention to help students improve in specific areas. Our pastoral, academic and special educational needs team work closely together to support students throughout the process.

We encourage you to support your child during this period by ensuring they have a quiet and conducive study environment at home, encouraging regular study habits, and maintaining a positive and encouraging attitude towards their efforts. We will outline the importance of these exams to the students in an assembly prior to the start of the exams.

Students will sit examinations in the hall for the following subjects: Maths, English Literature, English Language, RE, History and Geography. Other subjects will be testedduring class time. These times and dates will be communicated with your child in their lesson times.

Thank you for your continued support in your child's education. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Yours sincerely,

Mr T Rogers,
Deputy Headteacher
